The MNBAQ Foundation presents its first National Ball on the theme of ultramarine blue. Originally extracted from lapis lazuli, this pigment was already used in the arts of ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire, and was marketed as early as the Middle Ages in remote overseas regions, hence its name. For the occasion, Paprika has created a bespoke typographic signature, with interlacing letters evoking the dancing waves of the high seas. The deep blue is used throughout the programme, particularly in the colouring of works by the painter Alfred Pellan, whose collection is held by the Museum. The publication in blue duotone is based on a Swiss-inspired typographic grid, punctuated by illustrations by Pellan, all linked by an ultramarine blue thread.
