Wayward Arts is a monthly magazine whose main objective is to present the best of Canadian graphic design. Each month, a renowned graphic design agency is invited to design an issue using specialized printing and finish techniques. Invited to design one of the magazine’s editions, we drew inspiration from the publication’s recurrent thematic: communities. We thought of highlighting the history of mankind’s 100 most influential characters referred to by Michael H. Hart in his book The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History. We believed that the magazine format wasn’t the most appropriate for our concept, as opposed to the business card format which proved to be the medium par excellence to introduce those 100 characters. 100 cards were thus imagined, written, and produced using printing techniques and a format harmoniously suiting the characters’ respective personality. Humor, irony, and history were honored. The whole lot was presented in a cardboard envelope reminiscent of the publication’s usual magazine format.
